The style of an engagement ring is about far more than aesthetics — it reflects personality, lifestyle, and how a person wants to wear their ring every day. Before choosing a diamond, it's worth understanding the main ring styles and what makes each one distinctive.
At JQ Diamonds, our collection is built around four core styles, each available across a range of metals and diamond shapes. Here's what you need to know about each one.
Solitaire
The solitaire is the most enduring engagement ring style. A single diamond — typically round brilliant, oval, or emerald cut — sits in a clean, minimal setting with nothing to distract from the stone itself. The design draws all attention to the diamond, which means cut quality is paramount. A well-cut solitaire will outshine a higher-graded diamond in a more complex setting.
Solitaires suit almost every hand shape and personal style. They are timeless rather than fashionable, which means they will look as right in thirty years as they do today. They are also the easiest style to pair with a wedding band.
Best for: someone who values simplicity, wants the diamond to do the talking, or prefers a ring that feels classic and enduring.

Halo
A halo setting surrounds the centre diamond with a border of smaller pavé-set diamonds, creating the appearance of a larger stone and adding significant visual brilliance. The halo amplifies the size and presence of the centre stone, a one-carat diamond in a halo setting can appear closer to one-and-a-half carats to the naked eye.
Halo rings tend to suit those who want maximum sparkle and presence. They are particularly effective with oval, cushion, and pear-shaped centre stones, where the halo follows the outline of the diamond and creates a dramatic elongated effect.
The double halo, two concentric rings of pavé diamonds - offers an even more elaborate version of this style, and has seen considerable popularity in recent years.
Best for: someone who wants maximum sparkle, a ring with strong visual presence, or wants to maximise the apparent size of the centre stone.
Pavé Band
Pavé (pronounced pah-vay, from the French word for paved) refers to a setting technique where small diamonds are set closely together along the band, held in place by tiny prongs or beads. The result is a band that appears to be paved with diamonds, adding brilliance along the full circumference of the ring.
A pavé band pairs well with most centre stone shapes and is often combined with a solitaire or halo setting to create a ring that sparkles throughout. Full pavé covers the entire band; half pavé covers only the visible top portion.
Pavé settings require slightly more care than plain band settings, the small stones can occasionally loosen with heavy wear. This is easily managed with periodic check-ups, which we offer as part of our aftercare service.
Best for: someone who wants their ring to sparkle from every angle, or who wants to add diamond detail without changing the centre stone.
Trilogy
A trilogy ring - also called a three-stone ring - features a centre diamond flanked by two smaller side stones, traditionally representing the past, present, and future of a relationship. The symbolism is part of the appeal, and it resonates strongly with many buyers.
The side stones are typically matched in shape to the centre stone, though mixed shapes - such as a round brilliant centre with tapered baguettes or pear-shaped sides - create a distinctive contemporary look. The relative sizes of the three stones can also be varied, from near-equal sizing to a dominant centre stone with smaller flanking diamonds.
Trilogy rings have a strong visual presence and tend to suit longer fingers well. They also offer an opportunity to incorporate meaningful stones - some clients choose to set coloured gemstones as the side stones alongside a diamond centre.
Best for: someone drawn to the symbolism of three stones, or who wants a ring with a distinctive architectural quality.

How to Choose the Right Style
The most reliable guide is to think about the person who will wear the ring every day. Are they drawn to understated elegance or do they love statement jewellery? Do they work with their hands or lead an active lifestyle where a simpler, lower-profile setting might be more practical? Do they have a preference for a particular era of jewellery design?
If you are unsure, the safest starting point is a solitaire. It is the one style that virtually everyone finds beautiful, it will suit any diamond shape, and it can always be paired with a diamond wedding band to add more sparkle later.
Our specialists are also very good at reading the clues — if you bring us photos of jewellery your partner wears or has saved, we can usually identify the style direction quickly.
The ring style sets the tone for everything else. Get that right first, then choose the diamond to match — not the other way around.
